The NuLab Team

The NuLab team is a team of industry experts working onshore and offshore in locations throughout the world. Below is a summary of our team's credentials for you.

John Alborough | Managing Director & Principal Consultant

As one of the founders of NuLab Laboratory Solutions in 2005, John Alborough started his career in research and development of specialist metallurgy. In 1980 he entered the oil and gas and petrochemical industry with Moore, Barett and Redwood to carry our shipping inspection and cargo quality analysis before going offshore with MB&R as an laboratory technician in 1982.

Other than a 2 year period spent in pipeline hydro-testing as a chemical account manager, over the past 34 years John has worked for several major petroleum and laboratory service companies providing laboratory management and consultancy services on well over 100 differing platforms, FPSOs and onshore production, processing and refinery sites. During this time he has gained a wealth of laboratory management, process chemistry optimisation and consultative experience globally.

As a chemist John has working in just about every environment possible for a analytical chemistry specialist. His key strengths are in laboratory FEED management, the development of accurate and specialist sampling systems, oilfield analysis techniques, auditing of oilfield laboratories, laboratory refurbishment, technical authoriship of laboratory manuals and management of turn key laboratory solutions. In addition, John has many years' experience of production chemical application, process optimisation and system troubleshooting.

Following a period at BP, John was responsible for commissioning the laboratories and chemical injection plants on several major UKCS offshore field developments. Prior to the start up of NuLab he was responsible for the formation of a Project Management team at SGS. Over the past 20 years John has Project Managed the laboratory design, equipment specification, lab construction, commissioning and start up of well over almost forty oil and gas laboratory developments worldwide.

John is committed to the continuing development of oilfiled laboratory safety and the development of future chemists through the provision of high quality training, competence assessment and transfer of knowledge and experience to a new generation. These core values were principle reasons for the development of the NuLab Laboratory Training Centre in Aberdeen.

Cathy Alborough | Business Director

Cathy was previously a PA/Secretary to senior management of a major oil company and has many years' experience in the oil and gas industry. She is responsible for the overall management of the business, document control of laboratory procedures and administration of training courses.

Jim Milne | Development Manager

Jim entered the oil industry in 1973, well testing in the North Sea. He joined BP for the start-up of the Forties Field as an Offshore Chemist. He moved onshore and ran BP's Petroleum Engineering/Production Chemistry Laboratory for the next 15 years, gaining an enormous breadth of experience in all aspects of oilfield and laboratory operations. He then moved to SGS as Manager, Laboratory and Offshore Manpower, where he spent the next 9 years developing and expanding the business. His main role with NuLab is running onshore training courses.

Alastair Cuthbert | Consultant Chemist

Physical Science graduate who worked for 17 years in pharmaceutical quality control laboratories and document control office, gaining extensive knowledge and experience in instrumental and analytical chemistry, before moving to the oil industry in 2004. Alastair started as an onshore analytical chemist, before moving offshore as an ad-hoc chemist, then progressing to a rotation chemist on a platform. During that time, he was involved in scale squeezes, chemical trials, commissioning new wells, as well as the day to day production requirements of the platform and training of operators in analytical sampling and analysis. Since joining NuLab, Alastair has been involved in delivering training courses, auditing and preparing for DECC inspections, writing and reviewing analytical procedures, and fiscal sampling offshore.

Gwen Stewart | Consultant Chemist.

Gwen is an experienced chemist and holds a BSc Hons Degree in Forensics with Chemistry from Robert Gordon University. After entering the upstream oil and gas industry, she rose to become the Forties Pipeline System Allocation Shift Team Leader where she was responsible for analysis of Fiscal samples from the Brent/Ninian pipeline system in addition to that of Forties Pipeline. Thereafter her career took her into the offshore side of the industry where she managed the laboratories and chemical treatment systems on a number of offshore platforms and FPSO's as an Oilfield Chemist and Chemical Applications Engineer. Since joining NuLab, Gwen has been involved in delivering training courses, offshore laboratory training and audits, writing and reviewing analytical procedures.
